Story of the week: Man Nearly dies after being eaten allive by mice!

"The 89-year-old war veteran was found covered in blood and in a state of distress at the State Government-run Karingal nursing home at Dalby Hospital in Austrailia after he had been nearly gnawed to death by mice. Queensland Health blamed a widespread mouse plague, which it said was sweeping the Western Downs district.

The elderly man's daughter stated that the poor old fellow had been trying to brush the mice away as they continued chewing his ears, head and neck.He was so stressed that doctors put him on morphine to calm him down. He nearly died."

Castration Gone Bad!!

"A five-year-old hippopotamus named Lieber died in an Israeli safari park on Wednesday as he was being castrated by an international medical team.

A German veterinarian jumped up and down on the unconscious animal's 1.5-tonne body in an unsuccessful effort to restart Lieber's heart, which had stopped after a second dose of anaesthetic was administered to repair a torn suture.

Sagit Horowitz, a spokeswoman for the Ramat Gan Safari Park near Tel Aviv, said its hippo herd of 40 was the largest in captivity in the world and officials feared any further population growth could lead to aggression among the animals.

Four other males at the park survived their castration and another was scheduled to undergo the procedure later in the day, she said.

"The risk involved is very high, we knew (this) before we started," said Austrian vet Chris Walzer who came to Israel along with two colleagues, a German and Frenchman, to castrate the hippos, whose testicles are internal."

PLEASE DON'T BE A BULLY!

Reports are suggesting people who are bullied as children have twice the risk of having delusions, hallucinations or other psychotic symptoms as pre-teens as those who have not been bullied.

Bullying -- especially when it is severe or chronic -- can have serious consequences for some children, and may even act as a trigger for people who are genetically predisposed to schizophrenia.

Alright folks, it's that time again...Get to know the Tree Man, Dede.

35 year old Dede lives in a remote village in Indonesia with his two children, trying to care for them. Dede, a former fisherman, has an extraordinary skin condition: he has root like structures growing out of his body - branches that can grow up to 5cm a year and which protrude from his hands and feet, and welts covering his whole body. GET TO KNOW ME

Hello readers, I'm starting a weekly column entitled, "GET TO KNOW ME". Each week a new person or group will be featured.

This week, get to know... WESLEY AUTREY

Wesley Autrey is a New York construction worker and Navy veteran who in 2007 achieved international recognition after he saved Cameron Hollopeter, a 19-year-old film student who had suffered a seizure and fallen onto the tracks, from being struck by a New York City subway train.

On January 2, 2007, Autrey was waiting for a train at the 137th Street and Broadway station in Manhattan. He and two women noticed a young man, Cameron Hollopeter, having a seizure. Autrey borrowed a pen from someone and used it to keep Hollopeter's jaw open. Following the seizure, Hollopeter stumbled from the platform, falling onto the tracks.

As Hollopeter lay on the tracks, Autrey saw the lights of an oncoming train. Autrey dove onto the tracks. He realized there was not enough time to drag Hollopeter away. Instead, he protected Hollopeter by throwing himself over Hollopeter's body in a drainage trench between the tracks, where he held him down. The operator of the train applied the brakes, but two cars still passed over them.

Autrey received a number of gifts for his heroic act. They include but were not limited to:

- nearly $20,000 in cash gifts
- A trip to Disney Land
- A life time subscription to Playboy magazine (he was wearing a beanie with the playboy logo when he saved Hollopeter).
- Season tickets tickets to the New Jersey Nets
- Two Jeep Patriot's
- $5000 gap card

Wesley was invited to the 2007 State of the Union Address where he was recognized for is efforts.

He was also honored by CNN with their Every Day Hero award.

Cocaine prices set to substantially drop in Europe

"The price of cocaine in Europe is set to fall even further as smugglers use new routes through West Africa and the Balkans, says the UN anti-drugs agency.
In its latest report, the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), said West Africa has become a "major hub" for South American cocaine smuggling.
UK officials said last week that the price of cocaine had fallen by half in the last 10 years.
The INCB said prices would continue to fall unless the supply was curtailed.
INCB President Hamid Ghodse said more needed to be done to intercept shipments of cocaine and other drugs.
"The route of transporting for traffickers has become relatively easier and less susceptible to interdiction," he said." Click here for the full story.

Sussex spaniel wins best in show

Stump becomes the oldest dog in history to win the coveted "best in show" award at the 133rd Westminster Dog Show.

I calculated how old stump would be in human years. It is a common belief that 1 human year is equal to 7 dog years. That is not very accurate, since dogs reach adulthood within the first couple of years. A more accurate formula is 10.5 dog years per human year for the first 2 years, then 4 dog years per human year for each year after. That means Stump is 53 human years old.

Alex Rodriguez is juiced

Nearly two years after AROD told Katie Couric on 60 minutes that he never took steroids, or had been tempted to take steroids. Reports were released that Alex Rodriguez had been taking steroids from 2001-2003 while playing for the Texas Rangers. UH-HO ALEX!!

Steroids or no steroids it still takes a tremendous amount of skill to hit a baseball thrown by a major leaguer...and to make your biceps look like this.

NO RAIN IN CHINA=NO WHEAT

Big news out of the grand ole country of China today. Not only did China Central Television let their fireworks show get out of control. Chinese officials have warned that if they do not receive any rain, especially within the next 15 days, the world's winter wheat supply could be in great danger. The most interesting part of this story, "China has been firing thousands of shells and rockets packed with cloud-seeding chemicals in a desperate bid to spark rain across the northern Chinese wheat-growing heartland." As you might know, President Obama has ordered the closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Some of the most dangerous people on the face of the earth get sent here to be tortured by U.S. soldiers. An estimated 245 people are currently being held in the Guantanamo bay detention center right now without ever being charged of a crime.

This is a video of what might happen at Guantanamo bay. (1:09 is when it starts getting good!)
